The persecution complex, to me, is problematic for Christians. Don’t tell me you are persecuted when you are simply trying to defend your practice of discrimination. Don’t tell me you’re persecuted because you believe you should be free to ignore the rights and needs of the oppressed.

What does it mean to abide? What if we found ways in these anxious times, in these times when so many of us are just “hanging on,” to, instead, “hang in” there together? What if we chose, instead of grievance, curiosity and embrace?

Faith tends to do one of two things. It can close us down or open us up. When you read a Gospel like story of the Samaritan Woman, you have to wonder why we think it’s our job, as Christians, to shut people down. Ours is a faith with the capacity to bring light, and curiosity, and hope. Ours is a faith which can help us to laugh and to listen.
