God’s power does not enforce the border. God breaks through. God’s power seldom corresponds to our plans, to our carefully drawn lines. The Christmas story tells us that our God is a God of disruption, who shows up in the least likely moments, who demonstrates power in the strangest of circumstances. God’s power often circumvents our human authority.

Blue Christmas: Some time with Mary
I think we need to spend some time with Mary, the real Mary, because she helps us understand what it means to be a person of faith in a dark time.

This Advent, could John the bedraggled saint point us to a better way? Can we let the recovering addicts, those who have done the work and kept coming back, can we let them be our guides? Can we trust even the unexpected signs? They point toward the inexact work of setting our hope beyond ourselves.
Advent I: Hope for a Better World
Advent is an invitation to hope. We learn quickly from Jesus that hope is not something light and fluffy. Hope takes grit. Hope means taking risks. Hope means leaning into conflict, and living with the complexity, not settling for easy answers.
